Guide to Purchasing Men’s Wedding Bands

So, you’ve found the perfect engagement ring for your sweetheart and it’s time to select your own wedding band. Men’s wedding bands come in a variety of different styles, not just the classic smooth band. You may feel even more overwhelmed by your ring choices than you were by hers. But there’s no need to fret because we will help you navigate the process!

Follow these guidelines when shopping for men’s wedding bands

These 5 tips will make for a pain-free shopping experience.

Determine your budget

image of piggy bank

This is an important first step. Setting a budget is a good place to start because it will help you determine some of your other options, such as which metal you’d like and whether or not you want to add any embellishments, like precious stones. Knowing your budget up front will help your jeweler in finding the perfect wedding band for your preferences.

Consider your lifestyle

image of welder in a workshop

When choosing a wedding band, it is important to examine your lifestyle. Perhaps you work a profession that requires you to work with your hands or use certain tools that could potentially damage your ring. There are certain metals like platinum and titanium that are made for durability. Are you an exceptionally active person? Maybe you’d prefer a ring that is more understated and no-fuss. Remember, this is a piece of jewelry that you’ll likely wear on a daily basis and seldom remove. You want to make sure it can withstand most anything.

Choose your metal

There are a variety of metals to choose from when selecting a men’s wedding band. Some of the most common metals include platinum, white, yellow or rose gold, titanium, and stainless steel. These metals vary in price and durability. For example, platinum is typically more expensive but is also made to last.

Select the perfect fit

One of men’s biggest concerns when shopping for wedding bands is the idea of getting used to wearing a ring every day. If you’re not accustomed to wearing jewelry, this can certainly be an adjustment. This is exactly why making sure your band is the perfect fit is so important! Minor details like whether the edges of your band are flat or rounded can make the difference in the fit and feel of the ring. Try on as many styles as you can to get the best idea of what feels right for you.

Find a wedding band that fits your personality

image of man in suit and bowtie

Last, but certainly not least, you want to make sure that the wedding band you choose fits your personality. This symbol of love and commitment is meant to be worn for a lifetime so you want to make sure it accurately represents your unique style and identity. If your style is more reserved, you can opt for a classic wedding band with few embellishments. For a more modern look, you can consider adding extra detail or you can pick a less traditional metal like rose gold.

Is it time for you to shop for a men’s wedding band?

Remember these five tips and you’ll find the process to be less overwhelming than it may seem. And don’t forget, Leo Hamel Fine Jewelry & Engagement Rings Store has an extraordinary selection of affordable men’s wedding bands! Visit our showroom today, meet with one of our friendly experts, and we’ll help you find a wedding band that is perfect for you!

Affordable Engagement Rings

Shopping for an affordable engagement ring

Choosing an engagement ring is a pretty monumental decision, almost as significant as purchasing a home or new car. You want to make sure you get it right the first time, considering it is a major investment. There are no set rules for how much one should spend on an engagement ring, and there are tricks you can use to stretch your budget.

5 tips for shopping affordable engagement rings

Consider your choices in metal

Rose gold affordable engagement ring

Although platinum is the most popular choice for engagement ring settings, it is just one option. An alternative to platinum is palladium, which offers the same luster as platinum at a more affordable price. Other options include white, yellow, or rose gold—which can give your engagement ring a unique and often vintage inspired look.

Get creative with your setting

Halo setting affordable engagement ring

Choosing a more intricate setting can be a cost-saving way to make your engagement ring look slightly more extravagant than it actually is. Diamond prices increase with the size, so opting for smaller accent diamonds to enhance the center stone can be a great option for those working with a more modest budget. For example, a halo ring is a perfect option for tighter budgets, as the center stone is encircled by smaller diamonds, making the appearance of the center stone more pronounced. Other small details that can be added to the setting are personal engravements, filigree, or milgrain.

Antique engagement rings

Antique affordable engagement ring

Antique engagement rings are a timeless way of expressing love and romance. Not only can they be a more affordable option than their modern counterparts are, they are also as unique as the bride wearing it. With an antique engagement ring, you can be sure that no one will have the exact same ring as you have, adding to the distinctiveness of the ring itself and the love and romance it signifies.

Select a colored gemstone for your center stone

Blue sapphire affordable engagement ring

Choosing a blue sapphire or ruby, or any of our many colored gemstones for a center stone is a great option for lowering the cost of your engagement ring, as these stones are usually priced lower than a traditional diamond. If you’re attracted to lighter hues that more closely resemble a diamond, sapphires actually can be found in shades of yellow or pale pink.

Consider a ring without a center stone

Diamond band affordable engagement ring

It is becoming increasingly popular for brides to choose a ring without a center stone at all. These rings can be as elegant as those with a center stone and there are a lot of options to add remarkable detail. You’ll still be able to enjoy the brilliance of beautiful diamonds, just at a lower cost to you. You can even opt for an engagement ring that incorporates both diamonds and perhaps your favorite colored gemstone, making for a piece that is specifically unique to you and your style.

Do You Know the Symbolism Behind These Colored Gemstones?

Diamonds have long been the favorite choice in many engagement ring stores in San Diego. Not only are diamonds considered a girl’s best friend, they also have a long history as a symbol of love and elegance. However, colored gemstones are becoming more and more popular as alternatives for diamonds when it comes to engagement rings.

But did you know that gemstones bear a symbolism when it comes to their particular color and element make-up? Gemstones have been popular across various cultures and time periods. In this article, we are going to share interesting stories, beliefs and symbolism behind some of the most popular gemstones.

Popular Colored Gemstone Meanings

Garnet

Garnet colored gemstone ring

Garnet is considered a sensual gemstone. It is said to represent the creation of the world out of chaos, purification, and love. This gemstone was often linked to nobility and clergy. Ancient Egyptian pharaohs wore this gemstone on their necklaces, while the Romans used it to decorate signet rings that were used to seal documents.

Amethyst

Amethyst colored gemstone necklace

Ancient Greeks and Romans believed this stone to be synonymous with luxury, and it was used to adorn crowns and other items that reflected wealth and power. Because of the amethyst’s dark purple color, this gemstone was associated with Dionysus, the Greek god of Wine, and his Roman counterpart, Bacchus. Greeks and Romans both believed that the stone would help them stay “amethustos” or “not intoxicated.” Greeks would drink wine out of amethyst glassware to help mitigate the effects of the wine, and allow them to be wise and clear-headed.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine colored gemstone ring

Ancient folklore believed aquamarine to be mermaid treasure. It was supposed to have brought fearlessness and protection to sailors to ensure safe passage through rough seas. It is considered the stone of eternal youth and happiness.

Green Emerald

Emerald colored gemstone ring

It is purported that this gemstone was dedicated to Venus, the goddess of love. Ancient civilizations believed that the green emerald bears mystical powers of hope, wisdom, and healing, likely due to its enchanting color. Legend has it that anyone who held an emerald under their tongue was granted special powers to be able to predict the future. Additionally, emeralds were used to ward off evil spirits and spells, to protect the wearer against dark magic, and cure various diseases.

Pearl

Pearl colored gemstone ring

Pearl is believed to bring feelings of happiness and positivity, and can soothe negative emotions, making it perfect for nurturing the growth of pure love. Europeans often linked pearls with purity and innocence and this symbolism is persevered to this day. Interestingly, on the other side of the planet, ancient Chinese believed that this gemstone helps ward fires.

Ruby

Ruby colored gemstone ring

The ruby was once considered more precious than the diamond. The deep red color represents passion as well as prosperity. In the Hindi culture, rubies were offered to a Krishna – a high deity in their pantheon. Her worshipers believed that gifting such a stone of nobility would grant the giver royalty in the next life.

Peridot

Peridot colored gemstone earrings

Peridot is one of two gemstones (the other is diamond) that is actually created beneath the earth’s crust, in the mantle—and is brought towards the surface through natural events such as earthquakes. Peridot is thought to inspire inner radiance, improving thought with clarity and enhanced awareness. Ancient Egyptian’s linked the gemstone to good health, luck and confidence. In fact, some people believe that Cleopatra’s famed “emeralds” were not emeralds at all, but were peridots instead.

Blue Sapphire

Blue sapphire colored gemstone ring

Sapphire is the stone of royalty. In ancient lore, it was believed to protect its wearer from harm and to bring good fortune and insight. Historically, the color blue has been considered the color of fidelity. Therefore, sapphire has been a popular choice for engagement rings, especially in the Art Deco era. In fact, sapphire was as popular a choice for engagement rings back in the 1900s as diamonds are today.

Opal

Opal colored gemstone ring

Since the opal can manifest different colors, people believed it had supernatural powers. It is said to be the most mysterious of gemstones, inspiring optimism, creativity, and lessening inhibitions when it comes to feelings of love and passion. Ancient Romans linked the stone to hope and love, while Greeks revered it for its clairvoyant properties and thought it brought good health to its owner.

Topaz

Blue topaz colored gemstone ring

Topaz’s energy which is harnessed from the sun is believed to be one of the warmest, embodying properties that enhance feelings of love, friendship, and fidelity.

Turquoise

Turquoise colored gemstone ring

Turquoise is considered a protective stone. Ancient Persians used the stone to ward off harm and ill-intent referred to as the “evil eye.”  It is believed to heal the heart of old wounds, bringing tranquility to its wearer. It is also a great stone to add some color to your wardrobe!

Minimalist Engagement Rings

For some of us, less is more, especially when it comes to style. If you consider yourself a minimalist, finding the perfect engagement ring may be easier than you think. With so many styles and options for personalization, you’re sure to find an engagement ring that reflects both your modest taste, while also maintaining your unique style. Keeping it simple does not mean having to sacrifice elegance and sophistication. There are many options when choosing an engagement ring that can be both simple and eye catching, and having a more modestly styled ring leaves room for further embellishments to be added down the road, like to celebrate a milestone anniversary or vow renewal. Not to mention, selecting a minimalist engagement ring can also help cut down your cost when shopping.

5 Options for Choosing Minimalist Engagement Rings

The Classic Solitaire

Image of solitaire minimalist engagement ring

The classic solitaire engagement ring is one of the most well-known and refined options for those who wish to keep their ring style dainty and delicate. And there is no shortage of options when it comes to the classic solitaire ring. You can add your own flare by opting for a colored gemstone in place of a diamond, by choosing a distinct setting, or even by choosing a different shaped stone than the traditional round stone. Even something as simple as using six prongs instead of four can change the entire look of your ring.

Bezel Solitaire Setting

Gold bezel minimalist engagement ring

A bezel solitaire setting is an option to help set your ring apart from the classic solitaire. Rather than prongs, the center stone is surrounded by a continuous band of precious metal. Because the stone is slightly elevated, this setting is perfect for light to naturally reflect on the diamond. Bezel solitaire settings are great for the woman who may be a little more active or who may do work with her hands, as this setting keeps the gem super secure.

Uniquely Shaped Diamonds

Marquise minimalist engagement ring

Rather than opting for the traditional round diamond, one can maintain unpretentiousness while also setting their ring apart from others by selecting a fancy diamond shape. Some examples are marquise, emerald, princess, cushion and asscher shaped diamonds, all of which are an excellent way to add some fun and flare to your ring. It is popular for celebrities to choose uniquely shaped stones for their engagement rings, such as Blake Lively whose diamond is oval-cut, and Lady Gaga whose engagement ring from Taylor Kinney was heart-shaped.

Selecting Your Metal

Rose gold diamond engagement ring

It is becoming increasingly common to see women opting for a different metal than the traditional white gold or platinum. Yellow gold is a great option for making your white diamond stand out, while rose gold is also incredibly popular. Opting for rose gold can give your ring a vintage inspired feel, such as when paired with the classic solitaire setting. Not to mention, the metal is known for being complementary to a variety of skin tones.

Opting for a Diamond Band

Diamond band engagement ring

Center gemstones may be the most common, but are not required to make for a beautiful engagement ring. If you’re seeking something understated, a diamond band could be the perfect option for you. Diamond bands can easily be stacked with wedding ring bands, making it easier to add your own style.

Whatever your minimalist style, you will find tons of awesome engagement ring options at Leo Hamel Fine Jewelry & Engagement Ring Store. Whether you prefer a new, vintage, or antique ring, our experts will work with you to make the perfect choice. And don’t forget to check out our financing options that make owning your dream ring easier to manage.

Design Spotlight: Venetti Engagement Rings

Designing fine jewelry is an art; each and every Master Jeweler is an artist in their own way. And just like traditional artists, these designers have free rein to do whatever they can imagine. This is one of the most exciting aspects of designing fine jewelry- the creation of one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Once a jeweler pictures an idea in their head, they can execute it flawlessly, with time and effort. And many jewelers have a specific signature to set them apart from all of the others. One particular designer we’re interested in is Herzl Lary, CEO and designer for Venetti. Why are we so interested in Herzl, you ask? Well, for starters, his designs are immaculate. If you’ve never seen any of his Venetti engagement rings, you have to check them out.

But there is one key detail about his designs that is the most intriguing: the use of hidden rubies. On every one of Herzl’s Venetti engagement rings there is a small ruby set on the inside of the band. Yes, the inside, seen in the picture below.

What’s up with the hidden ruby in Venetti engagement rings?

Now, you might be wondering:

“What the heck is the point of setting a ruby on the inside of an engagement ring band?”

And that’s a reasonable question. Clearly, it’s not for aesthetic purposes since you can’t see it unless you’re looking for it. So, what could it be?

Just like you, we were curious, so we decided to ask Herzl ourselves. And the answer we received was actually very poetic. Herzl himself puts it best:

“The placement of the ruby in each Venetti ring will bring a sense of power and confidence to the wearer. The presence of the ruby stimulates the senses to increase vitality and give the wearer the confidence to overcome timidity and propel towards prosperity.”

close up image of Venetti engagement ring with hidden ruby

With this specific design detail, it’s all about how the jewelry makes you feel, not how it looks. The energy from the ruby evokes emotion and makes your engagement ring that much more sentimental.

Above all else, rubies are associated with love, passion, and romance, making it the perfect stone to incorporate into an engagement ring setting. The vibrant red tone of each ruby represents the powerful emotions of love and passion and symbolizes the color of love and of the human heart. Since the beginning of time, rubies have been associated with power, passion, and faithful commitments, which is exactly why Herzl Lary decided to insert it in every engagement ring he designs.

With all the emotion and attention to detail Herzl provides in his Venetti engagement rings, it’s obvious he is very passionate about his work. And that’s exactly what we think makes them so special. So the next time you come across a Venetti engagement ring, take a little peek at the inside of the band. If you see a small, sparkling red stone, you’ll know it was designed specifically by Herzl Lary.

Shop Venetti Engagement Rings in San Diego

Love the meaning behind the hidden ruby? Stop by our jewelry store on San Diego Avenue and we’d be happy to show you more of these unique Venetti engagement rings. Trust us- you’ll fall in love with this design. You might not think this small feature could have such an impact, but once you put the ring on your finger, you’ll realize sometimes the smallest detail has the most significance.
