Eco-Friendly Engagement Rings

Recycle, re-purpose, renew—the three major principles of an environmentally friendly lifestyle. So how, you may ask, does one maintain these standards when shopping for eco-friendly engagement rings? Luckily, shopping with sustainability in mind does not limit your engagement ring options.

One of the most popular alternatives to buying a diamond engagement ring with uncertain origins is to shop vintage instead. With vintage engagement rings growing in popularity and demand, you’ll surely find something that fits both your style and ethical way of life.

Why shop vintage engagement rings?

Vintage engagement rings are a conflict-free option for the environmentally and ethically conscious bride. When you buy vintage, you can feel at ease knowing that your purchase won’t add further strain to Earth’s already fragile ecosystem. Buying vintage eliminates the need for mining precious metals and excavating gemstones, activities which adversely effect the environment. Some of these effects include deforestation, soil erosion, and the pollution of local water sources. Not to mention, transportation of these goods is not necessary, meaning you won’t be responsible for contributing to atmospheric pollution.

Selecting a vintage engagement ring is another way of recycling and re-purposing—taking what was once someone else’s beloved treasure and making it your own.

Not only are vintage engagement rings environmentally friendly, they’re also an ethically sound option. Unfortunately, diamonds, colored gemstones, and precious metals are often sourced from regions of the world where there is severe conflict. The harvest and sale of these highly coveted riches has frequently led to violence, civilian exploitation, and devastating warfare within the underdeveloped countries where these resources are abundant. Choosing a vintage engagement ring allows you to be sure that your purchase will not help fund these unethical practices.

If you’re concerned about how vintage eco-friendly engagement rings compare to their modern counterparts, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, vintage engagement rings have proven to withstand the tests of time. After all, vintage jewelry has been pre-owned and has likely lived a full life before landing in your hands. Jewelry from previous eras has been designed to last. Vintage engagement rings can often be a more affordable option as well, since you are buying something that is pre-owned. In addition to these reasons for choosing vintage, you can also be sure that the engagement ring you select will be one-of-a-kind and set your ring apart from the rest. Many vintage pieces were designed before modern-day methods of mass production. This means they were carefully crafted by hand and likely fashioned from materials of the highest quality.

If you consider yourself environmentally and ethically cognizant and wish to apply these ideals when shopping for your big day, there’s no better way than choosing a vintage engagement ring!

Fall 2018 Accessory Trends

The first day of autumn is quickly approaching! The air feels crisper, the temperature is cooling off, and Starbucks is once again serving Pumpkin Spice Lattes—fall is coming in, full swing.

September 22nd marks the official start of autumn, and if you’re anything like us, you can’t wait to show off your fall fashion! The changing of seasons is the best excuse to revitalize your wardrobe with exciting new trends, and what better way to incorporate new styles than with accessories? They’re generally less expensive than clothing and easier to shop for. So, this fall season, skip the messy dressing room and choose to accessorize instead! We’re breaking down all of the 2018 autumn accessory trends for you—be it jewelry, hats, handbags, and more!

Jewelry to Wear for Fall 2018

Fall colors differ from summer and spring in that the tones are usually a bit darker. Glitzy golds, deep purples, emerald greens and sheer black are among the fall favorites when it comes to the colors of autumn clothing and accessories, so we’ve created a nice list of the top picks for this coming season.

Outdoor inspired pieces

Nature-inspired designs were repeatedly spotted on the runways of Fashion Week, from designers like Valentino and Chloe. Common motifs included leaves, vines, feathers, and florals. If you’re looking to rock an earthier look or consider your style to be bohemian, these outdoorsy designs are perfect for you.

Cuff bracelets

image of cuff bracelet

This year’s fall trends favor the flamboyant – and bracelets are no exception. Cuffs could be seen on the runway of nearly every designer from Alexander McQueen and beyond. This style of bracelet is a favorite in the fashion world for a few reasons. Most importantly, cuffs are large statement pieces that have space to add accents, engravings, and other unique design elements. If you’re more of a minimalist, don’t rule this accessory out altogether. Instead, consider a solid metal cuff that is more understated, but still draws attention to your ensemble.

Chunky chains

Large, bold chains are in for fall. They’re the perfect accessory for giving your look a bit of edge. Fashion Week saw designers pairing grand, solid metal chains with florals and other feminine motifs. It’s the best way to blend together the many facets of your personal style because, after all, who wants to adhere to only one way to dress?

Ornate chandelier earrings

Dazzling statement earrings were a favorite at Fashion Week. With the holidays around the corner, what better way to accessorize your party dresses than with a pair of these stunners? When worn properly, chandelier earrings can elongate your face and enhance the natural beauty of your collarbone. They’re the ultimate going-out accessory.

Accessories to Wear for Fall 2018

A lot of people wonder how they can spice up their favorite fall clothing with accessories, so we’ve made a list of our favorites!

Logos & designer fashion

image of logo belts

Branded fashions usually feature the designer’s logo, though not always as conspicuously as some would prefer. For those who love designers, this fall’s fashion is for you! Accessories from shoes to handbags, and everything in between boasted large, eye catching logos. Now, we know that this trend can go a little overboard. Our expert tip? If you’re going to wear logos, do so in small quantities. One or two items at most is best if you want to avoid looking like a walking billboard.

Glam gloves

Though not as commonly worn on the west coast, gloves are very trendy for this fall and winter season, because they are an unexpected way of introducing color to an ensemble. Dress up a little black dress with a bright pair of pink gloves and you’ll look like a modern Holly Golightly.

Belt bags

One of the more functional trends that was seen on the runway was belt bags. Ideal for carrying only the essentials, these bags give their wearer an inherently casual and carefree vibe. This accessory can be as elegant or as relaxed as you’d like, depending on the look you wish to create. Designers like Givenchy offer styles with lavish gold hardware and dainty straps—you can truly take this look from day to night with ease.

Statement scarves

image of scarves

Unlike gloves, scarves are a cold weather accessory that can be comfortably worn even in sunny Southern California. Let’s also not forget how versatile scarves can be. Besides the obvious tying around the neck, scarves can be worn fixed to a handbag, around your waste as a belt, or your head as a bandanna or cover up. Not to mention, scarves are made from a variety of materials—some better for warmer weather. Their unique styles and patterns make them ideal for pairing with any outfit.

Western wear

From cowboy boots to big, ornate belt buckles—this fall’s fashion draws inspiration straight from the wild west. Designers used traditional black and tan leathers, fixed with beautifully detailed silver hardware. If you want to get wild, you can pull off this old west look with your favorite pair of blue jeans or, if you’re feeling funkier, pair with a solid colored dress and booties.

Past, Present, and Future Rings

You’ve surely seen women wearing three-stone diamond engagement rings, with a large center stone accented on either side by two smaller gemstones. These are known as past, present, and future rings that are sometimes referred to as forever, trilogy, or trinity rings. They’re incredibly popular and stylish for any bride-to-be, not to mention these three stones are packed full of symbolism.

Past, present, and future rings are designed to be a symbolic representation of the stages of life that you and your partner have shared together and will no doubt continue to build upon as you journey into marriage. Each stone speaks to a moment in your relationship, all of the memories you have made with each other, and all of the wonderful moments you’ll surely share as you advance through life side by side. There is no gesture more romantic than proposing to your loved one with a forever ring. It demonstrates your lifelong commitment to your partner and to building a life together that can withstand the tests of time.

Religious symbolism of trinity rings

To many, marriage is significant to their religious values and beliefs. Three-stoned diamond engagement rings are in many cases believed to be a representation of these beliefs. Each of the three stones depicts the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, hence the name trinity ring. If you and your loved one hold religion dear, it may be worth considering a trinity ring for your bride as a gesture of your dedication to both her and your faith.

Popular three-stone engagement ring designs

There are a number of ways to make a three-stone engagement ring even more special and personalized but choosing a custom ring is the #1 way. Many forever rings feature round brilliant cut diamonds with smaller diamonds on both sides, or even colored gemstones such as deep blue sapphires or rubies set as side accoutrements. You can always choose a gemstone that is special to her or significant to your relationship together, such as the gemstone that corresponds with her birthday month or the month you went on your first date. For further personalization, you could use stones that have sentimental value to you or your loved one. For example, Prince Harry most recently proposed to wife Meghan Markle with a three-stone engagement ring fashioned with diamonds from his mother, Princess Diana’s, personal collection.  There is also room for customization when it comes to the ring band with a variety of metals to choose from and details like engraving that can be added for an extra special touch. Past, present, and future rings are not necessarily only found in contemporary designs either, but can be vintage styles as well.

Why choose a three-stone ring over a solitaire?

image of three-stone engagement ring

In addition to past, present, and future rings being incredibly romantic and symbolic, they are often a great choice for those trying to stay on budget. They’re usually priced a little cheaper because they feature three smaller sized stones rather than one large diamond. The two smaller diamonds flanking the center stone give the illusion that the center stone is larger than it really is, meaning your ring will sparkle and glitter exactly as you want it to, but without putting a huge dent in your pocket!

Oftentimes, we find ourselves deciding between spending our hard-earned money on endless designer fashion, makeup, and other products that pamper. It becomes an internal struggle of risking your finances or risking your ego. One can be felt (by you) and one can be seen (by you and by others). Frankly, trying to maintain your high fashion look and social prestige without breaking the bank can become exhausting. So, how can you have the best of both worlds?

Shop Sustainable Designer Fashion

If you’re environmentally conscious, this is a big deal for you! When you shop used clothing and accessories, you’re not contributing to the manufacturing of new items; therefore, you’re decreasing your impact on the environment. It may seem small, but every little bit counts. Additionally, you’re sustaining the life of certain styles and trends rather than allowing them to be thrown out and discarded. This alone is a benefit in itself because you’re personalizing your own style with vintage clothes, shoes, and accessories.

Shop a Wide Variety of Name Brands

Another benefit of shopping at luxury consignment stores is the convenience. Gone are the days of driving from store to store or browsing from site to site. Whether you’re looking for Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermès, or any of your other favorite name brands, you can find them all at one shop. Your options aren’t limited. In fact, your options are only more plentiful with a variety of designer labels.

Stunning September Sapphires

September babies are some of the lucky few who have a wide selection of birthstones to claim as their own. A variety of the corundum mineral, the sparkling sapphire, is the birthstone for this lovely fall month. Typically, most people envision the color blue when they think of this gemstone, but there is actually a wide selection of colors to choose from.  Next to diamonds, the sapphire is one of the most popular and durable gemstones. Whether you’re looking for a way to treat yourself to a birthday present or purchase a gift for a September-born friend or loved one, sapphire jewelry is an excellent choice.

image of sapphire earrings

History of Sapphires

There is a great deal of myth and lore regarding sapphires. The name sapphire is derived from “sapphirus,” the Greek word for blue. The ancient Greeks believed that sapphires were connected to the spirit world. They’re most often associated with the god Apollo, the Greek god of prophecy. Those who practiced sorcery believed that sapphires could grant them access to enlightenment and higher consciousness. Ancient Persian civilizations believed that blue sapphires were remnants of a pedestal upon which the earth stood, the reflection of which gave the sky its blue coloring. Sapphires have long been a symbol of divine wisdom and purity, which is why the gemstone was often reserved for members of the clergy, high priests and kings. The sapphire was even regarded as a holy stone by the Catholic church.

Sapphires have long been associated with royalty and have been worn by kings and queens throughout history for their powerful defensive properties. As far back as biblical tales, King Solomon and Abraham were believed to have worn talismans fashioned with sapphire. The stone is also often associated with the British Royal Family. Queen Elizabeth II has a collection of sapphire jewelry, pieces of which once belonged to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She is frequently pictured in a sapphire necklace and earring set gifted to her by her father King George VI for her wedding. In addition, Prince Charles famously gave Princess Diana a sapphire engagement ring which is now worn by Prince William’s bride Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.

The world’s largest gem quality blue sapphire was unearthed in Sri Lanka and was given the name Star of India. Though it once belonged to banker J P Morgan, this magnificent gem is now housed in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The Star of India is said to be cursed, as it was stolen from the museum in the 1960’s by a group of burglars who made off with the sapphire and a handful of other precious gems, though luckily the sapphire was later recovered. Sapphires are most frequently mined in India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Australia, Brazil and China, but the world’s largest sapphire trading center is in Thailand. However, here in North America, Montana mines are known for producing delicately hued yellow and pink as well as cornflower blue sapphires – the purest blue colored and most highly coveted variation of the sapphire.

Along with being prized as September’s gemstone, sapphires are given to commemorate 5th, 45th, and 70th wedding anniversaries.

Now that you’re familiar with the history of sapphires, and their unique properties, there’s only one question left to ask yourself—what color sapphire should you choose?

The Rainbow of Sapphires

The most popular color of sapphires is blue, but the September birthstone comes in shades of the entire rainbow. From blue, to pink, to yellow and more, each different colored sapphire holds a different meaning. Depending on who you’re shopping for, the color you choose can make the gift even more special.

Blue Sapphires

image of blue sapphire ring

Blue is the most popular and well-known color of sapphires. This color of the September birthstone can be found in shades ranging from light blue to a dark, vivid violet. Blue sapphires have been held in high regard for many centuries and, as previously mentioned, are typically associated with royalty. They are also considered to be symbols of love, loyalty, wisdom, and power. Treat any September baby to a gift of blue sapphire jewelry and she is sure to feel like a queen.

Blue sapphires are also a modern alternative to diamonds for engagement rings. If perhaps you are planning a special birthday proposal for the September baby in your life, a blue sapphire is an excellent choice to represent your love, in addition to the month of her birth.

Pink Sapphires

image of pink sapphire necklace and earrings

The hues of pink sapphires range from pale pink to a stunning, vibrant deep pink. But do not get confused with the color red. Red is the only color exception for sapphires; a “red sapphire” is actually a ruby. Pink sapphires are in high demand due to their beautiful peachy color and their excellent light reflection. All of the various shades of pink sapphires are considered to be the most universally complementary stone color to all skin tones. No matter what kind of sapphire jewelry you choose, it is sure to dazzle against her skin. A gift of pink sapphire jewelry is also even more meaningful as it represents inner resilience, strength, and good fortune.

Yellow Sapphires

Bright and cheery, a gift of yellow sapphire jewelry is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. This color of the September birthstone can range in shade from greenish-yellow to orangish-yellow; however, the most popular shade is a bright canary yellow. Since fancy colored yellow diamonds are so popular, a less expensive alternative is a yellow sapphire. But you certainly won’t be sacrificing any beauty or brilliance. Yellow sapphires are considered to be bearers of wisdom, prosperity, and good luck. They are also some of the largest cut sapphires, making this shade of the September birthstone the perfect gift for anyone who loves big, bold jewelry.

Padparadscha Sapphires

If you’ve never heard of a padparadscha sapphire, you’re not alone. In fact, this particular September birthstone is the rarest color of the gemstone. It is also one of the rarest gemstones in the world! The combination of pink, orange and yellow creates a padparadscha sapphire. Their beauty is unprecedented and extremely striking as they resemble sunsets, lotus flowers, and other tropical settings. The appeal of this gemstone is its uniqueness and rarity, making it the perfect gift for your one-of-a-kind loved one who has a September birthday.

In addition to all of these gorgeous colors, there is actually one more version of sapphire: the white sapphire. Technically speaking, white sapphires are actually not white. They are simply colorless and transparent since no trace elements are found in the mineral. White sapphires are not to be confused with diamonds, but they do make excellent gifts for those who are fond of brilliant, sparkling gemstones.
