A Closer Look at the New Tiffany True Engagement Ring

More than a century ago, Charles Lewis Tiffany redesigned the engagement ring, determined to create a setting that would better accentuate a center diamond. Prior to, diamonds were almost always secured in a bezel setting, their beauty overshadowed by unsightly metalwork. Tiffany’s design sought to elevate the center diamond above a plain band, mounting the stone between 6 thin metal prongs that allow maximum light to enter the table and crown. Aptly named the Tiffany Setting, this design has come to define the modern engagement ring, and is still one of the most sought after styles by those who treasure its timeless elegance.

Fast forward to modern day, and you’ll discover that Tiffany & Co. is as innovative as ever. The brand recently made a number of changes to bolster business, including the launch of their youthful “Believe in Dreams” campaign, and the addition of the charming Blue Box Café to their flagship New York City store. Though, the most important upgrade has to be the launch of the Tiffany True collection, the brand’s first new engagement ring line in nearly a decade. Fitted with its own trademark diamond cut, the Tiffany True engagement ring is likely to be another grand triumph for the esteemed jewelry retailer. Curious to know what’s so special about this ring? We are too! Which is why we’ve chosen to take a closer look to bring you all of the details of what some are already deeming a contemporary classic.

What makes Tiffany True so special?

Upon first glance, the thing that stands out most about the Tiffany True engagement ring is the diamond. The cut is exclusive to Tiffany & Co., a modified square-shaped diamond with a large main facet that’s perfect for ultimate light dispersion. Answering the demands of active brides, the Tiffany True diamond rests low on the finger, making it more secure and practical for everyday wear.

Equally impressive is the ring’s uniquely designed setting. The diamond nestles between four corner prongs fixed to one another by a subtle T-shaped detail, a clever bit of branding on behalf of Tiffany & Co.’s designers. The ring’s prongs are specially created to be discreet, so as not to take away from the true focal point—the diamond. Additionally, the ring’s band was designed to be ultra-thin and delicate so the metal’s brilliance would not compete with that of the diamond.

Tiffany & Co. seems confident that the True collection has all the makings of a classic. Much like the legendary Tiffany setting, this modern, streamlined design gives all of the spotlight to the diamond. Its traditional beauty and exceptional sparkle help the Tiffany True engagement ring appeal to the varying tastes and styles of future brides. Those who consider themselves more reserved will appreciate this ring’s simplicity, while those who are a bit flashier will love the diamond’s brilliance and shine. Its universality is what makes Tiffany True so desirable, and likely to have brides-to-be dreaming of the sight of Tiffany’s trademark little blue box.

The Rainbow Rolex Daytona

In 2012, Rolex made waves when it released a re-imagined version of its legendary Cosmograph Daytona, featuring a series of ornate embellishments. The Rolex Daytona was already a mega success for the watch company, a longtime favorite of famous race car drivers like Paul Newman. This new design was a bold, extravagant take on an iconic Rolex watch with a cult-like following. Beautifully highlighting the artistry and skill of Rolex’s in-house gem setters, the bezel is fashioned with 36 baguette-cut sapphires hand set in a rainbow gradation, and the mid-case boasts an astounding 56 individually set diamonds. Nicknamed the “Rainbow Daytona,” the watch was produced in both white and yellow gold, and sold in very small quantities. Its rarity only helped add to its appeal, and it wasn’t long before it became sought-after by watch collectors around the world.

Now let’s jump to 2018, when the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was once again unveiled at Baselworld in an eye-catching new color—Everose gold, Rolex’s very own shade of 18k rose gold. Just like its predecessor, the new Everose Daytona is a masterpiece that has watch enthusiasts everywhere scrambling to find one for themselves.

So, what sets this new Rainbow Daytona apart from its previous version? It’s all in the metal. Rolex’s trademark Everose gold is the perfect shade to offset the dazzling rainbow sapphires set in the watch’s bezel. The warm tones of rose gold coupled with the colorful gemstones makes for an overall appearance that is more harmonious than the older 2012 model. Besides its captivating beauty, this rich, rosy metal is made to withstand wear from the elements, retaining its color and luster for years to come. And like all Rolex watches, the Everose Daytona is waterproof up to 100 meters.

Additionally, the new watch also features 11 multi-colored sapphires set as the hour indexes. This is in contrast to diamonds which were used for the earlier Rolex Daytona’s. The use of colorful gemstones really stands out against the watch’s black lacquered dial. The change is small but significant, making the timepiece that much more stunning. Not to mention, Rolex has a standard of only using gemstones that are internally flawless, meaning each sapphire has absolutely no imperfections or inclusions. This is one reason why Rolex only produces the Rainbow Daytona in small volume, as it is difficult to source gems of such superior quality.

Though some have criticized the Rainbow Rolex Daytona for its bombastic appearance, it’s impossible to question the skill and attention to detail that went in to the design of this extravagant timepiece. It has drawn both male and female fans, broadening its appeal and driving up demand even further. First priced at around $97,000, the Everose Cosmograph Daytona sold at auction in November for an astounding $246,013—more than double its original figure. Some watch aficionados have even dubbed it the most sought after watch of 2018. With 2019 underway, you can expect interest in the Everose Rolex Daytona to continue to grow, as it attracts attention from every corner of the globe. But to secure one of these exclusive timepieces will require that you either have an insider connection, or an immense amount of money and luck. Fortunately, there are a number of other luxurious Rolex models to gawk over that are available for sale right here in San Diego!

History of the High Jewelry Houses

High-end jewelry, also known in the Paris fashion world as Haute Joaillerie, is masterfully designed by the world’s most dedicated and talented artisans. Pieces are often one-of-a-kind and cannot be bought in stores. So, what makes these high jewelry brands so exclusive, and what about their designs sets them apart from the rest? We’ll take a closer look at some of the most famous names in fine jewelry and how they’ve established themselves as legends of Haute Joaillerie.

Haute Joaillerie Designers

Bulgari

Established in Rome in 1884 by Sotirio Bulgari, Bulgari has been a recognizable name in high-end jewelry for some time. You’ll usually see their name written as Bvlgari™ to reflect the traditional Latin alphabet. Though Sotirio was an immigrant to Italy from Greece, he possessed tremendous skill working with precious metals and was able to open his first shop shortly after moving to Rome. His two sons, Constantino and Giorgio, both worked for their father’s business and took over when he passed away in 1932. It was the two brothers who really established the brand as a respected name in fine jewelry, especially post WWII when restrictions on precious metals and stones had been lifted. Their use of platinum, diamonds, and other sought-after stones like sapphires and emeralds cemented their status as purveyors of unique and distinct fine jewels—especially among the wealthier elite. It was during this time that the brand began to flourish and really take on its own style. Nowadays, a Bulgari piece is identifiable by its ancient Roman and Greek influences, and use of brilliant colored stones like sapphires and rubies. The company boasts a history of celebrity clientele, including Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Andy Warhol, Sophia Loren, among others.

Chanel

Chanel is a widely recognized name in both the couture fashion and jewelry industries. The company was founded in 1909 in Paris, France by Coco Chanel, who herself owned quite the collection of fine jewels. Though her clothing designs were sleek and simple, Chanel liked to dress up her clothing with a combination of both fine jewelry and costume pieces. It wasn’t until the 1930’s that she launched her first high end jewelry collection. Coco Chanel commissioned Duke Fulco di Verdura to design her collections, eventually making him the head of Chanel jewelry. Fulco is credited with designing the famed Chanel Maltese Cross fashioned with multicolor gemstones, which ended up being one of Coco Chanel’s favorite statement pieces that she wore often.

Cartier

Founded in Paris, France in 1847 Louis-François Cartier got his start by taking over his master’s workshop. However, it wasn’t until his grandsons, Louis, Pierre, and Jacques took over the family business that they established themselves as a well-known name in fine jewelry. It was Louis, who maintained the brand’s flagship location in Paris, that really cultivated Cartier’s signature style. His innovative garland designs made from platinum and diamonds brought platinum to the forefront of fine jewelry artistry. His list of wealthy clientele was plentiful, with names like Princess Mathilde Bonaparte and Edward VII who once referred to Louis as “the jeweler of Kings, the King among jewelers.” Cartier high jewelry is truly the best of the best. Between their ornate, handcrafted jewels and elegant wristwatches, Cartier didn’t follow rules, instead they were setting them. In addition to revolutionizing the use of platinum, Cartier also played a hand in introducing men’s wristwatches into Parisian society, an accessory that was considered rather bold for the time. Prior to popularizing the wrist watch, men were expected to carry only pocket watches.

Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany & Co. is arguably the most familiar name in fine jewelry. But did you know that the company was founded as a stationery and fine goods retailer? Established in 1837, founders Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young offered customers fancy stationary items such as pens and key rings, a tradition that the company has maintained and even expanded to include additional items for the home. Tiffany & Co. has made some remarkable contributions to the world of fine jewelry, including being the first company to send out mail order catalogs to customers, which they aptly named “The Blue Book.” The signature blue color usually associated with the brand was officially given the name Pantone 1837 for the year the company was founded. Tiffany & Co. has earned recognition for maintaining the standard of using only silver that is 92% pure when crafting their jewelry and other items, hence the 925 engraved on all Tiffany products. This standard was universally adopted in the United States, thanks to the exquisite craftsmanship of Tiffany & Co.

David Yurman

Founded by David and Sybil Yurman in 1980, David Yurman has built a total of 44 boutiques worldwide, securing their status as a renowned high jewelry brand. Yurman has an artistic background in sculpting, having traveled throughout his younger years, working as a sculpting apprentice before opening his own studio. He has perfected the craft of sculptural jewelry with notable designs like his famed cable bracelets. Yurman was the first well-known jeweler to set diamonds in silver, setting his work apart from the rest. His pieces are also recognized for their mixed metal styles. David Yurman jewelry has been worn by several famous faces including Sarah Jessica Parker, Angelina Jolie, and Jennifer Lawrence.

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Prong Setting

The most commonly used setting for solitaire engagement rings is the prong setting, sometimes referred to as a claw setting. Prong settings are designed to secure your diamond (or other center stone) in place with small metal appendages. Seems simple enough, but in fact there are a variety of options to choose from when selecting a prong setting. So, how do you know if this type of setting is right for you? We’ll try to help make your decision easier by breaking down the various types of this common engagement ring setting.

Types of Prong Settings

  • 4-prong setting- when it comes to prong settings, four prongs are most popular. This is because fewer prongs means your center diamond will be more visible. Four prong settings are recommended for diamonds that weigh 1 carat or less, as heavier diamonds may require additional support. If you have a four-prong setting, it’s important to occasionally check your prongs for frailty or instability. Because there are fewer of them, if one of them fails, you could risk losing your center stone.

image of four prong setting

  • 6-prong setting- the six-prong setting is a classic solitaire ring setting. Commonly referred to as the Tiffany setting, the six-prong design is ideal for keeping your diamond safe and snug in its place. One disadvantage to this setting is that the greater number of prongs makes them more obvious at first glance.

image of six prong setting

  • More than six prongs- it is less common to see rings with more than six prongs, though they do exist. Typically, these rings have stones larger than 1 carat that they are supporting. Generally, the more prongs you have, the safer your gemstone will be. However, prongs do interfere with the visibility of your center stone. Depending on the size of your center stone, consider how you can balance a great view of your diamond with the safest setting available.
  • V-shaped prongs- if you have a fancy cut diamond, v-shaped prongs are ideal for protecting it from harm. Diamond cuts with sharper corners, like a marquise or pear-shaped diamond, require extra protection as they are more susceptible to chipping.

image of v-shaped prong setting

  • Specialty prongs- if you’re the type of person who appreciates small details, you might want to consider uniquely shaped prongs for your engagement ring. For example, double claw prongs nicely compliment round solitaires and emerald cut diamonds, while heart shaped prongs add an extra touch of romance. Other styles, like fishtail prongs, are frequently featured in antique and vintage engagement ring designs.

image of specialty prong setting

Choosing the Right Metal

Another factor to consider when deciding on a prong setting is the type of metal being used. Because prongs are small and vulnerable to damage, stronger metals are ideal for these settings. Platinum is the most durable metal, followed by white gold. Unfortunately, yellow gold is slightly softer and may be more likely to break or require repair. Prongs tend to need repairing or re-tipping at some point, but you can save yourself some hassle just by choosing the sturdiest metal.

What to Look Out for When Choosing a Prong Setting

The most important detail to look for when choosing a prong setting is to be sure your stone(s) are secure. There should be no wobbling or rattling noise with movement. The table of the stone should be flush with the ends of the prongs. The stone should not be raised above or sunken below the prongs. Prongs that are too short or too long can be easily damaged, so be sure they’re just the right size. If you’re shopping for vintage or antique engagement rings, check the integrity of the prongs before buying. These pieces may have weakened over time, so checking this before you make off with your purchase is wise.

Morganite Engagement Rings

2019 will see future brides challenging convention and choosing alternatives to your traditional diamond engagement ring. There are plenty of gorgeous gems to choose from, but this year’s favorite by far will be morganite. This delicate pink colored variety of beryl is of the same family as aquamarine and emerald, and derives its rare pigment from small traces of manganese. If you’ve found yourself marveling at one of these blush colored beauties, you’re not alone. Stylish brides-to-be everywhere have taken note of morganite’s growing popularity, which is why we thought to highlight some of the top reasons for choosing a morganite engagement ring.

Morganite History

The largest morganite deposits are in Brazil and Madagascar. Although, gem-quality morganites have been sourced from various regions of the world, including Afghanistan, China, and Russia. Discovered on the island of Madagascar in 1910, morganite is named for American financier, J.P. Morgan, an avid gem enthusiast and collector. Gemstone lore states that morganite brings compassion, assurance, and promise to its wearer—all of the elements of a long and healthy marriage!

Morganite vs. Diamonds

image of morganite engagement rings

What makes morganite an ideal alternative to diamonds? For starters, morganite is one of the more durable gemstones, with a Moh’s rating of 7.5 to 8. While we know diamonds to be the toughest gemstone with a solid 10 rating, morganite is considered fairly sturdy in comparison. If cared for properly, a morganite engagement ring can last you a lifetime. Not to mention, you don’t have to sacrifice sparkle, since morganite has about as much radiance as a diamond.

Similar to diamonds, morganite can occur in an assortment of colors including orange, yellow, and violet, though the paler pink hues are most in demand. These pink gems often include hints of orange and yellow, giving them a distinct salmon color. Most morganite is heat treated according to industry standards in order to ensure stable color throughout, and to remove any traces of discoloration. Because morganite is usually unearthed in large pieces, stones frequently come in larger carat sizes—a factor that doesn’t impact the price the same way it does with a diamond. For optimal display of morganite’s brilliant color, it is actually advisable to select a larger sized stone.

The average price per carat of morganite is about $300, compared to $3,250 for diamonds. And if it’s the shade of pink you desire, to achieve the same look with a pink diamond would cost you even more. That’s a pretty big jump in price, another reason why morganite has become such a popular substitute for diamonds.

You could even choose to pair the two together. Diamond accents, such as a halo or pavé band, make an excellent addition to a morganite engagement ring. In fact, this is a fairly common combo, as smaller diamond embellishments are less costly than larger ones. So, since you’ll save on the cost of your center stone, why not splurge on its adornments?

Shopping for Morganite

image of morganite engagement rings

There are a few things you want to look out for when deciding on a morganite engagement ring. First, buyers must be weary of dishonest sellers. There are those who will try to pass off colored glass or synthetic stones as the real deal. Before you shop, familiarize yourself with the current price per carat of morganite, and steer clear of prices that seem too good to be true. If you have any doubts or uncertainty, be sure that your jeweler at least has a return or exchange policy, and be cautious of those who do not. Keeping these tips in mind, there are plenty of ways to customize a morganite engagement ring to your unique style.

The most popular pairing is morganite and rose gold. The warm copper tones of rose gold perfectly enhance the pink hues of morganite. Placed in a rose gold basket setting, morganite radiates beauty and romance. If you prefer a metal other than rose gold, then you’re in luck! Fortunately, morganite pairs beautifully with white and yellow gold, as well as platinum. Yellow gold draws out the orange and yellow undertones of the stone, while platinum makes pinker stones really POP.

When choosing a setting, you’ll want to keep in mind that morganite can be a bit frailer than diamonds. Opting for a bezel setting, or six prongs instead of four, could save you from loss or damage down the road. Morganite can be found in a variety of shapes, but cushion cuts and round solitaires are two of the most popular.

Choosing a Wedding Band for Your Engagement Ring

When choosing an engagement ring for your sweetheart, you want to be sure that it suits her perfectly. It should embody her sense of style, be functional enough for everyday wear, and designed to outlast ever-changing trends. The same rules should apply when shopping for wedding bands. Depending on her style, she may want a band that perfectly complements her existing ring, or she may wish to opt for something that stands out as its own statement piece. No matter her preference, there are a variety of wedding band styles to choose from, a few of which we’ll highlight here.

Wedding band shapes

There are four standard wedding band shapes: straight, contoured, notched, and a contoured/notched combo. Which you choose depends on a few factors, including the shape of your center stone, the size of the band on your engagement ring, as well as her individual sense of style.

Straight wedding bands

image of straight wedding bands

A straight wedding band can effortlessly pair with an engagement ring, as long as the center diamond is settled in an elongated prong setting. You want to be sure that the center diamond is not touching the edge of the band. One advantage of a straight wedding band is that it can also be worn without the engagement ring. Some women prefer not to wear their engagement ring daily for fear it may be lost or damaged. In this case, a straight wedding band may be ideal.

Contoured wedding bands

image of contoured wedding bands

Contoured wedding rings are designed to fit flush with the curve of your engagement ring, so that they appear to be a single piece. These bands are curved in the center, then straight throughout. A disadvantage of contoured bands? Because they’re designed to enhance the shape of your engagement ring, they should only be worn as an accent. In other words, they’re not meant to be worn alone.

Notched wedding bands

image of notched wedding bands

A notched wedding band is a modification of a straight band that has a small dip at the center. This tiny dip ensures that the engagement ring and wedding band fall into a perfect fit like the pieces of a puzzle. Again, the two rings will appear to be one. Similar to contoured wedding bands, notched rings aren’t typically worn as standalone pieces.

Contoured and notched bands

If you want to ensure that your engagement ring and wedding band fit snugly together, then you may want to consider a combination of a notched and contoured wedding band. These rings are made to fit engagement rings with elongated center stones or with extra fine detailing. For example, an oval shaped engagement ring would pair nicely with a band that is both contoured and notched. Contoured and notched bands maximize the grandeur, artistry, and harmony of a bridal set.

Trio bridal sets

image of trio wedding bands

Two wedding rings worn on either side of an engagement ring is called a trio bridal set. Trio bridal sets are available in various styles and consist of dazzling combinations of white, yellow or rose gold, as well as diamonds and colored gemstones. This timeless design symbolizes the everlasting love shared between two people. These bridal sets are complimentary to any style and beautifully decorate the hand of their wearer. Choose the one that best embodies your individual style and personality.

Popular wedding band styles

Though your options are plenty, there are some wedding ring styles that have been consistently popular among brides-to-be, demonstrating their timelessness.

Pavé bands

image of pave wedding bands

Pavé bands feature diamonds set into the metal. The stones are set very closely together, making prongs and tiny metal beads nearly invisible. This setting pairs very nicely with engagement rings that also have a pavé band, or with those that have a diamond halo. Pavé settings are ideal for maximum sparkle, so if you wish to flaunt your flashier side, this wedding band style is fit for you!

Metal bands

image of metal wedding bands

All metal bands are ideal for the no fuss bride. Though platinum is usually the preferred metal for this style, these bands can be made from white, yellow, and rose gold, as well as from titanium and stainless steel. If you’re the type to stress over losing a diamond or damaging a prong, a solid metal band may be a more practical choice. Not to mention, going this route will likely save you quite a bit of money.

Eternity bands

image of eternity wedding bands

Eternity bands have long been a favorite among future brides. Eternity bands are characterized by small diamonds, all of the same size, wrapped around the entire ring. These bands are commonly found in two styles, the shared prong setting and the channel setting. A shared prong is just as it sounds, the stones share a prong with one another. A channel setting consists of diamonds set side by side within a metal “channel.” This setting is ideal for keeping your diamonds safe and secure. Eternity bands are fancied for their glittering brilliance. After all, extra diamonds translate to extra sparkle!

Anniversary bands

Anniversary bands closely resemble eternity bands, though the diamonds only go halfway around the ring instead of all the way. This style is often preferred over eternity bands for a few reasons. First, anniversary bands are easier to resize than eternity bands. In fact, eternity bands are often unable to be resized at all. You’re also less likely to lose a diamond or damage a prong with an anniversary band, whereas an eternity band is at greater risk simply because there are more of them. Anniversary bands match wonderfully with nearly all engagement rings, as long as the bands on both rings coordinate with one another.

Let’s Dispel Your Doubts about Black Diamond Jewelry

You may have heard that diamonds can occur in a variety of colors like yellow and pink, but you may be surprised to learn that there are actually black diamonds. Though not the most common variety of diamond, black diamonds are undeniably beautiful and magnetically attractive. However, their rare appeal and ominous color tends to make people hesitant while shopping. But should they be? We’re addressing some of the most common questions people have about this mysterious black stone. Perhaps we can put to rest the skepticism and turn you on to all of the wonder and beauty contained within black diamonds.

Are Black Diamonds Real Diamonds?

No matter their color, diamonds are composed of crystallized carbon. Colored diamonds get their color from the presence of trace elements other than carbon, such as nitrogen, hydrogen, boron or graphite, as is the case with black diamonds. Naturally occurring black diamonds with a perfectly uniform color are extremely rare and are therefore very expensive. For this reason, most black diamonds on the market are treated using industry approved methods to ensure uniformity in color. Have no doubt that black diamonds are real. The only difference between them and colorless diamonds is that they have inclusions of graphite and random clustering in their structure.

How to Wear Black Diamond Jewelry

Some may hesitate to buy black diamond jewelry for fear that it won’t look good. But in fact, black diamonds can look incredibly beautiful when placed in the right setting. Black diamonds have an unusual opaque color that makes them equally stunning and alluring. But this doesn’t mean they don’t glow and shine like any polished gemstone would. Black is considered to be a neutral color, universally worn by most everyone. In turn, this makes black diamond jewelry very versatile, with styles available for both men and women.

Black diamonds have been spotted several times on the red carpet. Celebrities who have been pictured wearing black diamond jewelry include Sarah Jessica Parker, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Blanchett, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Evan Rachel Wood just to name a few. Black diamonds have even appeared on cable television, in the cult TV show Sex and the City. Though the series is fictitious, when Mr. Big proposed to Carrie Bradshaw with a black diamond ring, you bet fans around the world were dying to get their hands on the real deal.

Symbolism of Black Diamond Jewelry

The intensity of the color black alludes to strength, certainty and power. Diamonds, on the other hand, are a symbol of eternal and enduring love. The two elements combined together makes quite a powerful statement. Black diamond jewelry can inspire courage and determination in its wearer. It also encourages stability, which can be crucial to the health of a relationship.

Black Diamonds for Men’s Jewelry

Black diamonds are equally as suitable for men as they are for women. Because these stones are dark and opaque, they nicely complement men’s jewelry, especially for those who wouldn’t otherwise wear gemstones. There are many fine examples, including David Yurman’s exceptional and trendy black diamond men’s wedding bands. On the other hand, there are many women’s jewelry designers who are particularly fond of black diamonds, like Sydney Evan and John Hardy.

Durability of Black Diamonds

Even though graphite inclusions can make black diamonds a bit more brittle and prone to chipping than colorless diamonds, they are still unquestionably very durable and certainly appropriate for everyday wear. Black diamonds are still rated 10 on the Moh’s Hardness Scale that goes from 1 (softest) to 10 (hardest).

Giving a Black Diamond Engagement Ring

Engagement rings are highly personal and even though classic and timeless designs always make a good choice, a personalized ring is truly the best. If your bride-to-be’s personality matches the intensity, passion and drama of a black diamond engagement ring, it may be worth considering.
