Myths about the April Birthstone: Diamond

We’ve all heard the saying, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” at one point or another. Diamonds are the most popular gemstone, so in truth, a diamond can be anyone’s best friend. But those born in the month of April have even more adoration for this glistening gem. Why? Because diamonds are the April birthstone!

This month’s birthstone is the most celebrated gemstone on Earth. Its symbol for love and affection is recognized around the world. But diamonds haven’t always been appreciated the same way they are now. In fact, there are many ancient myths about the April birthstone. For pure entertainment purposes (and historical), let’s take a look at some of the myths and folklore that were once associated with the beautiful April birthstone.

Innocent or Guilty?

Many years ago, Jewish high priests used diamonds to determine the innocence or guilt of someone accused of a crime. The theory was that a diamond held before a guilty person would dull and darken, while a diamond held in front of an innocent person would shine with maximum brilliance. Their belief was the more truthful someone was, the more the diamond placed before them would sparkle and shine.

Healing Powers

Have you ever heard diamonds referred to as healing stones? Thousands of years ago, it was originally thought that diamonds had exceptional healing powers. Some healing properties that were attributed to the April birthstone include the ability to cure stomachaches, tiredness, depression, memory loss, and many other head and heart afflictions.

Today, different colored diamonds are even considered to have mystical properties. Yellow diamonds are said to make us more considerate and thoughtful. Blue diamonds help strengthen willpower and inspire us to take better care of our health. Pink diamonds are said to be useful for creative expression. And it is believed black diamonds give us the courage to look inside ourselves without illusion.

Who knew one small stone could harness so many different beliefs and powers?!

Cupid’s Arrows

Everyone associates Cupid with love. And everyone knows diamonds are symbols of everlasting love and eternal commitment. So it actually makes sense that the ancient Romans believed Cupid’s arrows were tipped with diamonds. This myth is perhaps the earliest association between diamonds and romantic love.

Tears of the Gods or Fallen Stars?

The Ancient Romans and Greeks shared very similar beliefs when it came to mythology. And the role of the April birthstone was among them. These beliefs were very powerful, including ideas that diamonds were tears of the Gods or pieces that had broken off of fallen stars. The Romans and Greeks believed in these myths so strongly they wore diamonds as charms to protect them from harm. It’s important to note that these were not cut diamonds. Raw and uncut forms of the stone were thought to hold the most power. It was actually considered taboo to cut a diamond, as it was viewed as an injury to the gods, meaning the diamond would lose its power. Classical Greek philosopher Plato took these powerful beliefs even further. His writings indicate he believed diamonds were living beings that embodied celestial spirits.

Temptation, temptation, temptation

In Persian culture there is a myth that diamonds were created by Satan. According to this myth, God had no need for diamonds, gold, or any other precious gemstones or metals when he created the world. Conversely, Satan noticed how much Eve loved the vividly colored flowers in the Garden of Eden. Therefore, he created diamonds and other colored gemstones in various hues in order to tempt humans.

You don’t have to believe these myths to appreciate the power of a brilliant diamond. But it’s interesting to see how different cultures have viewed these precious gemstones throughout history. Heard of any other diamond myths? Let us know in the comments section below!
